I'm Matt Neal, owner and head trainer of East Carolina Retrievers. I’ve been duck hunting and training Labradors for over ten years now. What started out as a passionate hobby has turned into a dream come true for me. I remember watching the Super Retriever Series on ESPN on Saturday mornings as a kid and thinking to myself, “One day I’m going to do that for a living”! I've been around dogs since I was young, English Setters and Pointers, Spaniels, and Labradors. I used to help the horse trainer that lived down the street as a kid just so I could get to ride his horses in the afternoons when I got done with chores. I grew up having cows, chickens, horses, dogs; animals have always been a part of life for me and I’ve learned a lot from them and most importantly for you, how to get them to do what I want. Ive been hunting since I was 8 when I got my first single shot 4-10 and would shoot rabbits and squirrels and all sorts of birds that my springer would jump up but I started duck hunting at the age of 15. I got lucky and purchased a once in a lifetime Master Hunter dog which sparked a big interest in wanting to learn more about retriever training. I started helping a local trainer so that I could learn more about training and really I just loved being around the dogs. I helped him training for a few years while I was in school and went off to college to play baseball at Pitt Community and later the University of Mount Olive where I majored in Ag Business. All the while duck hunting was all I had in the back of my mind but simply didn’t have the time for it. When I graduated and had time for duck hunting again, I decided it was time to purchase another dog. That got me looking into the history of british labradors and that’s where I found the right lineage that had what I was looking for out of a hunting dog which has a calm easy going temperament but is a hard worker that wants to please out in the field. I have been fortunate enough over the past few years to gain some wonderful connections in the U.K. that allow me to get top tier British Labradors of some of the very best field trial lines available in the United States. I import, breed, train and sell puppies as well as started and finished dogs. I have a passion for dogs and duck hunting and I love to help produce great companions as well as gun dogs that excel in the home, but most importantly in the duck blind or out in the field! I keep a limited number of dogs so that your dog gets daily interaction with me personally which maximizes the progress that we make during their training program. I have access to over 2500 acres of training grounds from flooded timber to corn impoundments, duck blinds, boats, big water to tight timber, shallow water to flowing rivers, your pup will get exposed to it all here with us. I look forward to turning your retriever into a once in a lifetime duck hunting machine but also a dog your wife can brag about in the house.
